Germany's Gigantic Gennaker Wind Farm: EUR 700 Million Boost! (2026)

The European Investment Bank (EIB) has approved a substantial EUR 700 million in financing for the Gennaker offshore wind farm in Germany, a project that has been a long time coming. This development marks a significant milestone in the country's renewable energy transition, but it also raises important questions about the future of sustainable energy in Europe.

The Gennaker project, developed by Skyborn Renewables, is set to be a massive undertaking, with a total cost of around EUR 3.1 billion. It will be the first offshore wind farm to be connected under the 'territorial waters regulation', allowing operators to secure grid connection under the Federal Immission Control Act (BImSchG). This regulation is a crucial step towards streamlining the approval process for renewable energy projects in German waters.

One of the most fascinating aspects of the Gennaker project is the evolution of its design. Initially approved for a 103-turbine project featuring Siemens Gamesa's 8.4 MW turbines, the project underwent changes as wind turbine technology advanced. In 2024, the project was re-approved to use 9 MW turbines, and now, it has been further modified to include 63 Siemens Gamesa wind turbines with a maximum capacity of 15.5 MW, resulting in a total output of 976.5 MW. This iterative process highlights the dynamic nature of renewable energy development and the importance of adapting to technological advancements.

The project's timeline is also noteworthy. With the installation of wind turbines scheduled to begin in late summer 2027, and the entire project expected to be commissioned by mid-2028, the Gennaker farm is set to become a reality in the near future. This rapid development is a testament to the growing momentum behind offshore wind energy in Germany.

The project has received full approval from the state of Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania, and the German transmission system operator 50Hertz has been instrumental in the development of the grid connection (OST-6-1). The HSI Joint Venture, comprising HSM Offshore Energy, Smulders, and Iv, is building the two offshore platforms for the grid connection, with fabrication nearing completion. This level of collaboration and infrastructure development is essential for the successful implementation of large-scale renewable energy projects.

Skyborn Renewables has been proactive in securing suppliers for the project. In September last year, they signed preferred supplier agreements (PSAs) for Gennaker foundations, inter-array cables, and their installation. Since then, firm contracts have been signed with EEW Special Pipe Construction (EEW SPC) for monopiles, Dajin Heavy Industry for transition pieces, Seaway7 for foundation installation, and a consortium of TKF and Boskalis for the supply and installation of inter-array cables. This level of supplier engagement is crucial for the timely and efficient execution of the project.

The Gennaker offshore wind farm is a significant step forward in Germany's renewable energy strategy, but it also raises important questions about the future of sustainable energy in Europe. As the project progresses, it will be crucial to monitor its impact on the local environment, the local economy, and the broader renewable energy landscape in Germany and beyond. The success of the Gennaker project could inspire similar initiatives in other European countries, contributing to a more sustainable and resilient energy future for the continent.
